On Thursday, December 15, hundreds of women’s rights advocates visited Jakarta Governor Basuki ‘Ahok’ Tjahaja Purnama right at his campaign office at Jl. Taman Lembang, Menteng, Central Jakarta, to express their full support for the governor’s plans to keep his post in next year’s gubernatorial elections.

Saparinah Sadli, a women’s rights activist, told reporters she was confident with the Ahok-Djarot [Saiful Hidayat] tandem, primarily for the pair being a “concrete example of diversity.”

Former chairwoman of the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan), Saparinah said their group will be rooting for the Ahok-Djarot pair, as they have a good outline of programmes for women.

The former chairwoman of Komnas Perempuan added that they were ready to help and support the tandem in disseminating their women-oriented programmes until they are elected into office. The commission sent a signature list of 436 activists to Ahok, signifying their support for the Jakarta governor and his running mate.

Veteran feminist Ita F. Nadia and Chairwoman Henny Supolo of the Cahaya Guru Foundation were among the women activists who graced the governor’s campaign office last week to show their support for Ahok.

The Jakarta governor thanked the women’s rights advocates for their support and asked them for continued criticism and direction.
