It’s official. Indonesia’s notorious traffic takes a toll on absolutely everyone, even the President Jokowi!
On Thursday, the people of Cilegon in Indonesia’s province of Banten witnessed a rare sight: their president and his officials walking two kilometres through the scorching heat to a military event after being stuck for 30 minutes in bumper-to-bumper gridlock.
They were held up as they approached the military parade in Cilegon, a port city about two-and-a-half hours drive from Jakarta, the presidential palace reported.
After enduring the traffic for roughly 30 minutes, “the president then decided from inside the car that he would walk,” his guard Ili Dasili said in a statement. The president’s initiative was quickly followed by his ministers as well as national police chief Tito Karnavian.
A video posted on the presidential jalan-jalan quickly went viral online where President Jokowi is seen walking along a busy road surrounded by his security guards while spectators yell and chant his name.
