KPU: 54 Polling Station Committee Members Died during Election Period

Fatigue and illness as the main reasons for the victim's demise.

The General Elections Committee (KPU) has announced that 54 members of polling station working committees (KPPS) have died after the 2019 election on April 17.

“54 people have passed away and about 32 have fallen ill,” KPU commissioner Viryan Aziz said at his office on Monday. Viryan cited extreme fatigue and illness as the main reasons for their demise. Some were also found to have been involved in accidents. Viryan has urged other KPPS members to stay fit and maintain their stamina while the national vote tally is still being calculated. “The situation is unfortunate and saddening. To me, they were the true heroes of the 2019 Election,” he added. Viryan also expressed his hopes for the health ministry and regional government to render free healthcare services to the KPPS members who are still ill to avoid more deaths. The KPU will also coordinate with the Ministry of Finance to compensate the grieving family of the deceased KPPS members, as well as families of those who were hospitalised.
