Indonesian UN Officer Killed in ET302 Crash

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the Indonesian passenger on board flight ET302, that crashed on Sunday, was an on-duty United Nations Officer. The flight departed from Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa at 8.40am local time and crashed six minutes after take-off. All 149 passengers and eight crew members were killed.

The Ministry’s spokesperson, Arrmanatha Nasir confirmed that the passenger in question was an Indonesian woman who lived in Rome, Italy. Harina Hafitz, 60, wife of an Italian national and mother of two, had worked for the UN World Food Program (WFP) for several years. She was travelling with other WFP staff from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Nairobi, Kenya to attend a meeting. Arrmanatha added that arrangements have been made between the Ethiopian authorities, the Indonesian Embassy in Rome, and the WFP office to transport the victim’s remains back to her family in Rome.

WFP executive director, David Beasley made a statement via his Twitter account, @WFPchief: “The WFP family mourns today — WFP staff were among those aboard the Ethiopian Airlines flight. We will do all that is humanly possible to help the families at this painful time.”

At least 19 people affiliated with various UN bodies were known to have been aboard the ET302 flight.
