Google to Launch Wi-Fi Service Across Country

Tech giant Google is set to bring Wi-Fi to Indonesia with its Google Station program, representatives said in Jakarta on Thursday, Aug. 24.

The program, which was first launched in India, will be introduced in Jakarta, Denpasar, Surabaya and Bandung before being rolled out across the country. Google will team up with local telecommunication providers FiberStar and CBN to support the massive project.

Further details of a timeline for the project are expected in coming months but at this stage, it is likely to be powered by access fees and advertising.

The focus on Indonesia is part of a renewed push into emerging markets, in which Indonesia is a big fish alongside India. Google has also launched a YouTube app designed specifically for data efficiency in these markets.

In India, Google has launched the Google Station initiative which has hooked-up cheap and easy Wi-Fi for the country. The program began in India because of the huge amount of people coming online, up to 15,000 people a day in India, Caesar Sengupta, a Vice President over -seeing Google’s next billion users, told the Verge after it launched last year.

Now, Google boasts 3.5 million monthly users of the 100 or so Google Stations.
