Indonesia Expat sat down with Ms. Melvina Andini, Head of Academics at Houbii Sports Academy and Ms. Sylvia Effendi, the Marketing Director of Houbii Urban Adventure Park, to talk about Houbii Sports Academy and their upcoming classes and new curriculum for 2019.
When was Houbii Sports Academy first established and why did you decide to open it?
When Houbii was first opened, we actually already had plans to open the academy along with the playground. We want people to know that trampoline is not only for fun and jumping around, we want them to know that it’s also for sports. That’s why we opened Houbii Sports Academy (HSA) in 2017. HSA has a variety of curriculums to help people gain skills and stay healthy at the same time.
What is in your curriculum?
In 2019, we will switch our term into semesters, from a three-month class to a six-month class. The new curriculum is our International Standard from Australian Gymnastics. We will have new coaches, who are actually the Indonesian National Team coaches, as well as the members of the Indonesian National Team itself. Our head coach is going to be the national team coach.
When do classes start for the new semester?
We will start classes on January 21, 2019 and will divide the classes by age groups: Ages 5 to 7, Ages 7 to 9 and Ages 9 to 12. This upcoming semester is new for us, because we are using International Australian Gymnastics curriculum and will now be dividing classes by age groups.
Can people above age 12 join the classes?
It’s really interesting because even though the maximum age is 12, we also have parents joining, as well as little toddlers. It really has become a family activity.
Why did you change the curriculum?
In 2018 we had classes for those who want to have fun and stay healthy, and classes for those who want to train professionally. For 2019, we want to focus on professional classes because we see the potential to create new athletes for trampoline. We have good connections with Persani which is the Indonesian Gymnastics Association, as well as the Ministry of Sports. We want our academy students to become professional athletes. The year 2018 was the first time Indonesia has competed in trampoline, which was during the Asian Games, and we want to continue to cultivate new athletes for Indonesia. It will be a dream come true for an HSA student to become an athlete. One of our goals is for our students to compete in the next National Championship or Pekan Olahraga Nasional in Papua in 2020 and represent Jakarta.
We also sponsor athletes to go to competitions. On December 15, 2018 we sent two coaches and four HSA students to compete in the third Singapore trampoline competition. We’re not only focusing on training, we’re also giving them channels to compete and perform to become better. We’re facilitating them to become athletes.
How successful has HSA been so far?
Right now, we have 239 students enrolled at HSA. Based on their testimonials, they have really enjoyed their time and they feel that it’s a very good activity for them. It’s very hard to find outdoor activities or activities that allows kids to run around and have fun. Our mission is to build good character through our academy. We want to build their self-esteem, confidence, discipline, and their teamwork abilities. In our classes we have people of different nationalities. Through our class we want to teach them to communicate in diverse groups. The classes are bilingual so it fits both foreigners and Indonesians.
What can foreign students gain from joining the classes?
Foreigners can join the class to gain trampoline and gymnastics skills and earn certification. We teach up to level 10. At the end of every semester which lasts 20 weeks or 20 classes we will do an assessment for levelling as well as a graduation and performance to showcase their skills. Every Saturday in December, we have students perform to the rest of our customers to develop their confidence and show their skills.
When does enrolment start and what are the prices?
We are already open for registration and enrolment for new students. Enrolment began on December 1, 2018 and will end January 14, 2019. Prices are Rp250,000 for the Enrolment fee, and Rp2.7 million per semester. This is for one class per week which lasts two hours (one hour coached session and one-hour free practice session) for a total of 20 weeks. For the price you will also get an HSA T-Shirt, two pairs of socks, a string bag, the Level Certificate and Merit Medal as well as unlimited free access to practice at Houbii Adventure Park anytime they want.
What are your plans for the future?
We are planning to open Little-U especially for babies and toddlers aged from three months to five years old to cover the ones who cannot join the gymnastics and trampoline class.
