teamLAB Future Park Presents Jakarta’s Biggest Interactive Art Exhibition from SGE Live

Jakarta Future Park

Sorak Gemilang Entertainment (SGE) brings a world-class exhibition by art collective teamLab to Indonesia this year, presenting Jakarta’s biggest interactive, creative experience teamLab Future Park and Animal of Flowers, Symbiotic Lives.

There will be five different digital installations: Animal of Flowers, Symbiotic Lives, Graffiti Nature: Lost, Immersed and Reborn, Sliding through the Fruit Field, Sketch Aquarium, and Light Ball Orchestra. The exhibition began on 20th June and is set to run until 20th December 2019 at Gandaria City, Jakarta.

While teamLab Future Park promotes the concept of collaborative creation, or “co-creation,” where people can engage in a creative experience with others, Animal of Flowers, Symbiotic Lives heightens awareness of the presence of others through interactivity. The digital technology that teamLab uses allows installations to evolve infinitely and move around freely, interacting with people and their surroundings, creating moments that can never be seen again.

Mervi Sumali, CEO SGE said, “Sorak Gemilang Entertainment is committed to offering family friendly activities to Indonesians and we are proud to bring teamLab to Jakarta. For more than 17 years, art collective teamLab has been displaying works of art in various countries across the globe, and their art exhibition has always been a long-awaited one. All visitors in Jakarta will be able to experience and enjoy activities of unlimited creativity through interactive digital installations. teamLab Future Park and Animals of Flowers, Symbiotic Lives is designed to bring enjoyment to the whole family and is a new destination to spend quality time together.”

Akitae Matsumoto, CEO of teamLab, said, “Humans are naturally collaborative and creative. However, current education emphasises only one correct answer over all others, stifling creativity. Free thinking and behaviour that is different is suppressed. And, by doing so, students become afraid of making mistakes and lose their natural creativity. Whereas in the real world, we find that there are no problems that have only one correct answer. As often as not, the correct answer 10 years ago is now incorrect. By creating new solutions that solve problems in different ways, and giving people enjoyment in the process, new correct answers are born. It is creativity that allows us to overcome problems that cannot be defined as either correct or incorrect.”

“By focussing on creating change in the connections between people, as well as creating positive experiences, teamLab hopes to turn individual creative acts into co-creative activities. Hopefully, through enjoying co-creation, people will be able to find creativity in their daily life. It was from such a desire that this project was born,” added Akitae Matsumoto.

teamLab’s 2,000sqm exhibition takes place at Gandaria City, Jakarta and contains five different installations:

Animals of Flowers, Symbiotic Lives

teamLab, 2017, Interactive Digital Installation, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi

Flowers grow from the bodies of animals. The flowers bud, bloom, scatter, and fade away. When people touch the animals, the flowers scatter. Once all of the flowers have scattered, the animals disappear.

Graffiti Nature: Lost, Immersed and Reborn

teamLab, 2018, Interactive Digital Installation, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi

Visitors will be immersed in a single ecosystem where various creatures drawn by people come to life. Living things eat and are eaten by others, creating one ecosystem together. When the animal that you draw eats other animals, its numbers will increase. If animals cannot eat for a while, or are eaten by others, they will die and disappear. Flowers will bloom if you stand still, but will disperse if you walk around. Butterflies increase in places where there are flowers, and crocodiles die if they are stepped on too much.

Sliding through the Fruit Field

teamLab, 2016, Interactive Digital Installation, Sound: teamLab

This is a slide where fruit grows. Various kinds of fruit are grown along the slope, and balls bounce around. You become the sunlight and slide down the slope. When your body collides with the balls, your sunlight energy will be transferred to them, and they’ll go flying off in all directions, and when they collide with fruit, the fruit will begin to grow. Each ball has a different role depending on its colour. For example, a light blue ball represents water: when the ball hits the seeds they sprout, bud, and blossom. When a yellow honey bee ball hits the flowers, they are pollinated and the flowers become fruit. When a fruit is hit by a ball, new seeds are sown, leading to new life.

Sketch Aquarium

teamLab, 2013, Interactive Digital Installation, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi, teamLab

Visitors are invited to draw a sea creature of their choice. Once completed, visitors will be able to see their creations come to life in a giant aquarium and swim with all of the other sea creatures. Visitors may also touch the sea creatures to see them swim away.

Light Ball Orchestra

teamLab, 2013, Interactive Installation, Sound: teamLab

Rolling a light-ball changes its colour and sound. Combined, the light-balls form an orchestra! The overhead light-balls communicate with those on the floor, as one is touched, the surrounding balls will be affected, changing the color of the entire space. Roll the light-ball in front of you, and it will change color and release sound. In the same space, participants use their bodies, interacting with the different-sized light-balls to change the colour of the space and to make music.
