The Indonesian police have arrested six people suspected of plotting the assassination of four state officials on Monday 27th May 2019.
Muhammad Iqbal, a National Police spokesman, stated in a press conference, “This group wanted to take the lives of four national figures. We will not reveal the names here.”
Eight people have been killed, and more than 900 are known to be injured after a series of clashes and demonstrations in the streets of Jakarta by the supporters of defeated presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto. Prabowo and his supporters have claimed that the 2019 election is a fraudulent one, furthering is claims after the General Elections Commission (KPU) declared victory for the incumbent Joko Widodo. However, Prabowo’s team has strongly denied any involvement in the rioting and brutal protests, claiming that the authorities have been violent towards the demonstrators.
The police and security forces have claimed that the protests and violent rallies have been organised by several groups. The six suspects, five men and one woman have also been arrested for smuggling weapons to Jakarta, with a maximum penalty of life sentence.
According to Iqbal, the suspects claimed that they had received Rp 150million from an unidentified source. A number of weapons were also confiscated by the police, including a homemade rifle with a telescopic sight. It was later found that the movements have been plotted since March 2019.
