East Kalimantan Safer from Terrorism, Natural Disasters ? Expert Opinion

Map of Kalimantan

Muradi, a terrorism observer from University of Padjajaran, has said that East Kalimantan has a lower potential for attacks, as compared to Jakarta.

It is also less prone to natural disasters.

“I think East Kalimantan is safer than Jakarta,” Muradi said. He further elaborated that criminal acts in East Kalimantan are mostly domestic and general. Unlike Jakarta, East Kalimantan does not lie in the ring of fire with earthquake potential.

Jakarta is also more vulnerable to natural disasters as it is surrounded by satellite cities. “So, other than disaster risks, the dynamic of the metropolitan city is no longer considered convenient and secure,” he added.

The establishment of a special military in the new capital has already been proposed by Indonesian Military (TNI) commander Marshall Hadi Tjahjanto, to avoid national threats.

“East Kalimantan will have its special command military to oversee protection measures from national or global threats,” Muradi confirmed.
