Airline personnel found the body of a dead infant inside one of the lavatories on board Qatar Airways flight 956 in Jakarta.

On October 9, airline officials made a tragic discovery on board Qatar Airways flight 956 at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The plane arrived from Doha, Qatar in the afternoon. Reports indicate that when workers and cleaners boarded the aircraft for routine maintenance after all passengers exited, they found the dead body of a newborn baby boy inside one of the lavatories.

Police and investigators are shocked and disturbed, and believe the infant to be the child of a domestic worker identified only by the initials EWR. It remains unclear whether the suspect may have given birth on the plane, or smuggled the deceased body on board first, then left it in the bathroom before exiting in Jakarta.

As quoted by Okezone, Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police Spokesperson AKP Sutrisna said, “We’re still investigating her motives. If she gave birth on board the plane then why didn’t she notify anyone or ask for help at the time?”

An initial forensic investigation suggests the infant died shortly after being born. Reports indicate that the suspect was seven months pregnant at the time of the incident, but it remains unknown whether she intentionally expelled the baby, or if premature birth naturally took place. Police have not been able to get a statement from EWR, as she is currently in intensive care at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital.
