Permanent bicycle lanes across Jakarta will soon be available after a dissemination period, stated City Transportation Agency head Syafrin Liputo.
“The public dissemination of Law No. 22/2009 and Regional Regulation No. 5/2014 in which stipulated that people using motorised vehicles are obliged to give priority for pedestrians and bikers,” Syafrin stated.
Though many vehicle drivers violated bike lanes, Syafrin will not impose any sanction against them. Instead, a patrol using bicycles every three hours to educate the public will be conducted.
“We will surely enforce the law later in the form of giving a ticket by police officers and towing by the Transport Agency for those who park their vehicles in the bike lanes,” Syafrin added.
Head of Bina Marga Agency, Hari Nugraha, is planning to build bike lanes ranging over up to 65 kilometres in five regions up to December 2019, following the Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan’s plan to issue a gubernatorial instruction on the bike to work.
The construction is divided into three phases:
Phase 1: Track length of 25 kilometres on roads affected by the odd-even policy
Phase 2: Track length of 23 kilometres on Jalan Jendral Sudirman, Jalan Sisingamangaraja, Jalan Panglima Polim, and Jalan RS Fatmawati Raya.
Phase 3: Track length of 15 kilometres on six routes of Jalan Tomang Raya, Jalan Cideng Timur, Jalan Kebon Sirih, Jalan Matraman Raya, Jalan Jatinegara Barat and Jalan Jatinegara Timur.
