Anies Awaits Government Response on Asylum Seekers

Anies Baswedan

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has stated that he is still waiting for the central government’s instructions for the relocation of asylum seekers who currently occupy the ex-Kodim building in Kalideres, West Jakarta.

“I’ve just coordinated with the central government this morning, they are also seeking a new place. We’ll wait,” said the governor at City Hall. Anies further added that the Jakarta government has no authority in handling the refugees, who have come from different countries.

The city can only offer them basic necessities, such as drinking water and sanitation. However, the decision about relocation is beyond the city’s jurisdiction. “The central government is looking for a place. If it’s ready, we will expedite the relocation,” he added.

The asylum seekers have previously refused to be relocated from the site. They claim that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has been unfair and slow in helping their transfer to the country.

“We want justice, we need shelter. Justice, justice, justice,” the refugees shouted on Monday 2nd September. It is estimated that about 300 refugees are currently living in the building.
