According to Riau police, eighteen Singaporeans in Montigo Resorts, Batam, When the middle section of a 70-metre-long wooden bridge collapsed.
Some of the tourists were in the process of taking selfies when the incident occurred on Thursday 7th November.
“The wooden foundations of the bridge have probably decayed, leading to its collapse,” said Riau Island’s provincial police spokesman, Colonel S. Erlangga. “Thirteen of them were rushed to the Bhayangkara hospital in Batam, where two victims had serious injuries. Meanwhile, the five other victims’ light injuries were treated at the scene.”
A local hospital staff member said that one of the victims with serious injuries probably had a fractured bone in the right foot, while the other likely suffered a fractured rib.
A spokesperson from Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “We are aware of the incident. Officers from the Consulate-General in Batam are at Bhayangkara Hospital to offer consular assistance.”
Police investigations have been ongoing at the resort since the accident happened after 4pm. As of 10am on Friday, at least four of those injured had already headed back to Singapore on a ferry.
