7.0 Quake Hit Northern Maluku Sunday, Early Tsunami Warnings Revoked

An earthquake had reportedly struck Southwest Ternate, Maluku.

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake had reportedly struck Southwest Ternate, Maluku, on Sunday night, 22.08 local time.

The Meteorology, Geophysics, and Climatology Agency (BMKG), who had earlier warned about the possibility of a tsunami, have revoked their warnings by Monday morning.

Head of the agency’s Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Rahmat Triyono said that an updated measurement showed that the quake was 7.0 in magnitude, and not 7.1 as had been reported earlier.

The tsunami warning was initially issued in several areas, including North Sulawesi and North Maluku, which were on alert after the strong tremor occurred 133 km southwest of Ternate, North Maluku.

“Based on BMKG monitoring for one hour, there have been 8 aftershocks recorded with a magnitude of 3.5 to 4.9,” Rahmat said in a press statement.
